In the 1st century BC Vitruvius said that good architecture required firmitas, utilitas and venustas – ‘firmness’, ‘commodity’ and ‘delight’. Whereas the first two are often achieved, ‘delight’ is less well understood. It is that quintessential quality that lifts the spirit, elevates the mind and evokes a sense of well-being and happiness.
